How Do You Shop Online when Using the Envelope System?
Q: How do you handle online shopping when using the envelope system?
Rachel: Awesome question. I love the envelope system, so I’m glad you’re making a habit of using it.
Here’s what I do: Let’s say I’ve cashed out my clothing envelope for the month, and I have cash in my wallet for clothes. But then I see a shirt online that I really like.
I’ll do one of two things. First, I might wait until the next month to buy it! If I do that, I’ll just deduct what I spend online from what I cash out. For example, if the shirt costs $25 and my budget is $100 for the month, I’ll only withdraw $75 to put in my envelope.
Sometimes, however, I see something I love, and I must have right now! Then I’ll just deposit that money back into my bank account right away.
So either wait and do your deduction before you cash out, or, if you’ve already cashed out, redeposit that money. So that means you have to stay on top of your situation.
With sites like Amazon (especially Amazon Prime), it’s so easy and addicting to just buy stuff. But don’t break the bank and spend money online that you don’t have in your checking account.
Be wise and reasonable with your spending, and you’ll get the most of your money with the envelope system.
